Housing Initiatives Complete, Bringing Hope to Displaced Grannies from Angkor Wat

Siem Reap, Cambodia - In a heartwarming development, the housing initiatives aimed at providing new homes for six elderly grannies displaced from their residences at Angkor Wat has reached a successful conclusion. This significant milestone was marked by the planting of fruit trees at the final two homes, signifying a new beginning for these resilient women. The homes, constructed by the dedicated team at Bracelets for Buildings, were made possible through a collaborative effort with Building Community Cambodia and the Siem Reap Food Bank

A group of compassionate individuals came together to lend a hand in the transformation of the grannies' new abodes. Naret, the esteemed Director of the Siem Reap Food Bank, and a medley of dedicated local and international volunteers have planted a selection of fruit trees, including mango, lime, and coconut, in the yards of these deserving grannies. Additionally, vegetable seeds donated by the generous Dianne Baumann and Colleen Hutchins have enabled the grannies to start their own vegetable patches. These patches will not only supplement their food supply but also address the prevalent issues of food insecurity and malnutrition faced by seniors in Siem Reap Province. By empowering them to take control of their nourishment, the initiative aims to create a more sustainable future for these elderly individuals.

Expressing their gratitude, the organizers of the Homes4Grannies initiative extended their heartfelt appreciation to all those who contributed. Their invaluable support has made a significant difference in the lives of these five grannies, which were facing a rather bleak future without their help. The newfound opportunity and the dramatic improvement in their quality of life have been nothing short of life-changing for these deserving women.

However, amidst the joy, a touch of sadness has touched the project. Regrettably, one of the grannies has passed away, leaving a void in the hearts of all involved. Nevertheless, Bracelets4Buildings has reaffirmed its commitment to the cause by pledging to construct the sixth house for another deserving family. This family, also relocated from Angkor Wat to Run Ta Ek, consists of Has Thy, a single mother, and her son Kimrong, who is living with a disability. This act of compassion ensures that hope continues to shine, even in the face of adversity.

The dedication and hard work put forth by Bracelets for Buildings in constructing the houses have been commendable. Building Community Cambodia, along with their sponsors, provides pensions to support the grannies on a monthly basis. Furthermore, the Siem Reap Food Bank has collaborated with donors and volunteers to provide each granny with fruit trees and herb gardens. These efforts aim to enhance the grannies' nutrition and self-sustainability, allowing them to lead fulfilling lives.

As this heartwarming story unfolds, the importance of community support becomes evident. The organizers urge individuals to join them in making a lasting impact by donating to this noble cause. Read about the grannies on the H4G project site https://bit.ly/homes4grannies

In conclusion, the completion of this housing initiative signifies a triumph of compassion and resilience. The five grannies, once displaced and uncertain, now find solace and security in their new homes. The collaborative efforts of Bracelets for Buildings, Building Community Cambodia, the Siem Reap Food Bank, and numerous other compassionate individuals has paved the way for a brighter future for these beloved seniors. The story serves as a reminder that, together, we can bring about positive change and ensure that no one is left behind.
